029: Sex and the Silent Church with Mo Isom

Mo Isom joins me on the podcast today to talk about her soon-to-be-released book, Sex, Jesus, and the Conversations the Church Forgot”. We are living in both a cultural and church climate that have all but forgotten the design, meaning, purpose, and importance of sex as created by God. The church treats sex as a largely taboo topic (or else as something solely for the purpose of “meeting a husband’s needs”), while the culture treats it in such a cheap, even abusive manner that folks are daily reaping the ramifications of having used sex in a way never intended by God. It’s time that we finally come to a full understanding of what sex truly is, and Mo is providing us with that and more on the show today.

Inspiring Quotes from Mo

“For far too long we have been shaking frustrated fists from the pulpit, preaching about the symptoms of failed morality and sexual struggles, but failing to really speak to the heart of the matter, speaking to the heart of people who are in a sex-crazed world right now.

“If we are basing our understanding of what sex has to offer us off what we see in Fifty Shades of Grey, then we are getting the lamest, most watered down, most absurd view of what sex is. Sex is truly this collision of hearts and bodies, of one flesh coming together and unifying and serving one another, laying down their lives for one another, it’s a beautiful collaboration in this act of worship.”

“It shifts our household every time my husband and I come together. It isn’t about me just going upstairs because my husband demands it or has a need that needs to be met.”

“When we are self-serving, that always leads to a dehuminization of others, because we are seeing our wants, needs, and urges as being more important than other people.”

“We have to start shifting a culture by first raising up our children to know the value of human beings. That will radically change our culture not simply in a sexual context, but also in a mission and gospel context, as well.”

“It’s not so much about behavior modificataon, but heart transformation. And heart transformation can come, but it has to start with heart education. We have to be pointed to the gospel. That’s when we can become repentant, grace-filled, compassionate Christians who view the world through the eyes of Christ and not just through a list of dos and donts.”

“We are grow up our whole lives being told sex is wrong rather than being taught on the bigger power of it, and then we’re suddenly supposed to flip a switch on our honeymoon. It doesn’t make sense.”

“Prior to marriage, the enemy will do everything he can to drive you together, and after marriage the enemy will do everything he can to pull you apart.”

“God couldn’t care less about our virginity if we don’t have heart purity.”

“I guarantee that when we begin to intentionally dance with the Creator and intentionally live this life seeking His truth, His redeeming truth and His guiding truth, we will begin to feel a peace that passes all understanding and live a life that is daily transformed. We will see growth, change, and our hearts impacted, because that is what the Holy Spirit is always faithful to do.”

“There is not a single woman too far gone or too far broken that cannot be redeemed and then put to use it in a really powerful way. Redemption is waiting for you right where you are.”
