Book Review: “The Way to the Savior: A Family Easter Devotional” by Jeff and Abbey Land

When I was first sent this book in the mail, I realized how much our family needed something like this. We have a plethora of different Advent family devotionals and other resources that we can go through with our kids during the last four weeks leading up to Christmas. We also had books on our shelves centering around the events of Easter Sunday itself. But we had no resource we could go through as a family during each of the 40 days of Lent, leading up to Easter Sunday. Now we do! And it’s called “The Way to the Savior: A Family Easter Devotional”.

First let me say that this family devotional is absolutely beautiful. The full-color, bright, vibrant, whimsical illustrations are a total delight. They capture the vibrancy of spring in a way that is sure to please every member of your family, from youngest to oldest.

This devotional contains an introductory letter for parents from the authors at the beginning, letting them know how to use the study as a family. What then follows is a series of 40 devotional readings that are to be read one per day leading up to Easter. They aren’t long and won’t take long at all to read, but they are meaty and full of truth. Each daily reading contains a verse, a devotional to unpack the verse, a prayer at the end, and a “Cross Connection”, where the teaching of that day’s passage is summarized in light of the gospel and you are asked a question pertaining to how you can live out what you have learned.

The forty devotionals are divided up topically into 8 aspects of Lent – “Hope, Love, Thanksgiving, Commitment, Forgiveness, Trust, Obedience, and Jesus’ Last Days”, thereby teaching your children important concepts pertaining to each of those topics. Activity ideas are included at the end, as well as my very favorite part, the “Memory Maker” Family Journaling Pages.

The memory maker pages at the end are comprised of a series of questions such as “What is your favorite Easter tradition?”, “What food did you share for your Easter meal?”, and “What chapter in this book was your favorite this year and why?” as well as lines on which to write out your answers. On the very last page is a helpful calendar listing out which day Lent begins (and therefore which day of the year to start the devotional!) each year from 2020 to 2030!

For all those reasons, this Family Easter Devotional is an absolute delight that is sure to become a family favorite for years to come! I highly recommend it!
